We presented InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, located on the She Shan mountain range, on November 15th 2018. Opposite from the typical architectural concept for a hotel based on high-rise buildings, InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland presents an unconventional design that expands the underground space reflecting the natural landscape of a 90-meter-deep quarry. The hotel turns an abandoned quarry into a unique space and it is considered the lowest hotel in the world.
The balance between humans and nature is the idea for the hotel, a perfect combination of architecture and natural environment instead of a bionic architecture. ATKINS signs the design for the idea and the façade of this project, which has 2 stories above the ground floor and 14 underground stories, including two stories under the water level. The interior design is signed by CCD (Cheng Chung Design). The architectural plan for the resort, designed to minimize the environmental impact, gathered the best Chinese and Western architectural design firms to break the technical barriers and it kept most of the building inside the disused well and integrated the quarry’s rock in the design.
VONDOM worked together with CCD to create an outdoor platform on the 14th underground floor, following the concept of balance and making sure that the indoor decoration was perfectly integrated in the exterior natural surroundings. With their sculptural, expressive form, collections Faz and Ulm by Ramón Esteve, Mora by Javier Mariscal and Fiesta by Archirivolto, including the exclusive and contemporary outdoor furniture, were chosen to create an atmosphere of harmony and serenity.
Each of the 336 luxurious rooms offers its guest unparalleled views and turquoise water in the bathroom that matches the water from the Caribbean beaches. One of the suites includes an aquarium, an ideal complement for this great hotel.
High-quality materials, environment and innovation were the keystones behind the making of this hotel, which offers the highest quality, luxury and comfort standards to its special guests.
