The dining experience begins with design
On the banks of the Aveiro canal, in the historic Cais dos Mercantéis, a classic is reborn with a new vision. Mercantel Restaurant, with over half a century of history, has been reinterpreted for a new era: a contemporary space where design and gastronomy coexist under a serene, timeless Mediterranean atmosphere.

The Paulo Martins Arq&Design studio has conceived a holistic experience that transcends the act of dining. Every detail—from the arrangement of tables to the dialogue between materials—seeks to evoke calm, connection, and pleasure. The result is an intimate ambiance, wrapped in earthy tones and lighting that softly brushes the surfaces, inviting guests to linger and savor the moment.

Geometries that shape the scene
At the heart of the project lie long communal tables and an open kitchen that establishes a direct connection between chef and diners. Everything is designed to encourage interaction and transparency, with no barriers—turning the everyday act of dining into an experience.
The Faz chairs and bar stools by Ramón Esteve for Vondom reinforce this concept. Their faceted silhouettes capture the light and organize the space; the comfortable seat and stable footrest invite guests to stay. Lightweight yet resistant, they are ideal for intensive use—easy to clean and move, with a graphic presence that defines the interior without overwhelming it.

Graphic palette, restrained light
The design embraces a sober, urban atmosphere: black ceilings and ducts, linear shelving, and ribbed glass that filters the background. Lighting is low and focused—perimeter lines and accent points—that highlight edges and textures through contrast rather than warmth. The terrazzo bar adds subtle vibration, while wood appears in quiet details. The Cilindro planters bring scale and a touch of nature, introducing balance without breaking the monochrome aesthetic.

A new chapter for a classic
At Mercantel, design becomes part of the menu: it orchestrates the flow, shapes the light, defines the tempo, and makes every table feel personal. The geometry of Faz and the greenery framed by Cilindro organize views and rhythms, while the open kitchen seals the sense of transparency. The result is a complete gastronomic experience—where food and space work together to create lasting memories.
